The Play Brigade recently joined with the Adaptive Hiking Team to create inclusive opportunities for hiking and canoeing. The Adaptive Hiking Team was founded in January 2013 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts and families with disabled children with a mission to find better ways for people with disabilities to enjoy nature. Using off-road chairs and harnesses, the group discovered that the wheelchairs could handle a surprising range of trails. Since the inaugural outing in Hingham, MA, the Adaptive Hiking Team completed dozens of hikes each year, including ski slopes and several summits of Blue Hills. More recently, the Adaptive Hiking Team added canoeing to its’ programming. Thanks to the hard work of volunteers, the bravery of the participants, and the kindness of the employees of Charles River Canoe and Kayak, the team has enjoyed several adaptive canoe trips.
